Here’s a little something that very few know about the origins of Northfield…
Way back when we were deciding to make our own mandolins we were hustling as team to put food and wood on the table. Co-founder “Dino” Xhang was coming from a manufacturing background with a variety of industry experience that made it possible to take on a few different projects .. a good way to spread out the risk a bit and actively create some revenue while we hammered out the plan for mandolins. Dino’s past experience with leather tanning and Italian shoe-making design came in very helpful when it came time to look at making cases and gigbags and other gear. In fact, his experience was so vast that we took on a project making travel gear for a company based in San Diego and created a line of thin wallets, card cases, passport cases as well as some other items. That was 20 years ago and it made what eventually became Northfield possible. We met all sorts of artisan shops along the way including the one we partnered up with on this latest project of making our own convertible mandolin straps. Just like a great tune, it all comes back around. We hope you’ll try one out.

Strap Fit

The Northfield Convertible strap is designed for standard mandolins rather than octave models. While the Wavelength Octave Mandolin is smaller than our other octave instruments, whether this strap will work for you depends on your personal fit and preferences.

Choosing the right strap is often a matter of personal preference, depending on how you prefer to attach it and where you like the instrument to sit. For example, some players install a strap button at the base of the neck, while others prefer securing the strap at the headstock under the strings.

In our experience, we recommend using a strap button at the base of the neck. Securing a strap around the headstock can put varying tension on the neck and pull the instrument out of tune; reducing undue stress is always better for the long-term health of the instrument.

To determine your ideal strap length, we suggest using a piece of string to test different positions. This will help you decide if you prefer the instrument to hang lower or sit closer to your chest, and provides a specific measurement to help you find the correct length for the right fit.

Regarding strap width, it's also about personal comfort; we generally recommend a strap width between .75" and 2". Anything narrower may become uncomfortable over time due to the instrument's weight, while anything wider than 2" may feel bulky. Again, this is just for consideration as it's largely about personal preferences.
